Vintage (mid-20th Century) Swedish (Cast Aluminum) Moose Crossing Warning Sign

Sold out

This is an authentic vintage Swedish aluminum Moose warning sign, a classic piece of Scandinavian road history. In the 1950s, these signs transitioned from earlier wooden to metal. It warns drivers of the potential presence of moose while also becoming more than just a traffic warning. It's become an iconic national symbol due to its popularity with tourists...to take the Moose home as a souvenir; often appearing on merchandise like stickers, mugs, and clothing. The physical road signs are no exception, as they were frequently stolen by visitors, leading authorities to often replace them with generic warning signs in high-theft areas.

Unique to Sweden (for warning & prohibition signs), the yellow background is for high visibility during winter. Because of the heavy snowfall and long winters, a standard white background, like those used in Norway or other parts of Europe, can easily blend into a snow-covered landscape or become "invisible" when the sign itself is partially covered by frost or snow. The yellow provides a sharp contrast against white snow and grey winter skies, enhancing visibility ensuring drivers can spot the warning from a distance.

This is an authentic mid-20th century (1950s-1970s) Swedish variation of the Moose sign.
