This is an authentic vintage German enamel pedestrian crossing warning sign, a distinctive piece of European road history, notably used in Germany & Spain during the mid-20th century. This variant produced between the years ca. 1950s-1970s after which, a more abstract, hatless stick figure w/"zebra" stripes is used.
This specific "hat man" design was part of the German StVO 1956 regulations and remained in production through the 1970s. Manufacturer stamp at reverse indicates production in 1972; sourced directly from the region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Description/Condition:
It features a triangular red border with a central black silhouette of a man wearing a hat & suit. It has a significant & solid covering of enamel with a glossy finish. A solid, heavy weight piece with minimal enamel wear. The edges are rounded to form an approximate 1/2" sign depth. Standard age wear consistent with age should be expected.
