Established on 5 August 1936, the Navy Expeditionary Medal recognizes those Armed Forces members who have landed on foreign shores and participated in operations against enemy forces and for which, no other campaign medal has been awarded. The medal is retroactive to 12 February 1874. Subsequent awards of the same are denoted by Service Stars worn on the award ribbon.

Note: This medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal are not authorized to be awarded for the same event; service members who qualify for both (for same event) must choose the medal they prefer.

Description
Obverse:
Features a sailors beaching a craft carrying Marines, an officer & American flag at the background. The word "Expeditions" embossed above.

Reverse:
An eagle shown alight, facing left, grasping sprigs of laurel perched upon an anchor. The inscription, "United States Navy" arched above the eagle's head & the inscription "for service" presented horizontally above the laurels.

Symbolism:
American bald eagle - Represents the United States
Anchor - alludes to Marine Corps or Navy service
Laurel - Victory and achievement.
