The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) was authorized by President Dwight Eisenhower by Executive Order on April 22, 1953 & awarded to all Armed Forces personnel in recognition of federal service as part of "normal" extended active service.

Its initial award eligibility was for service in the Korean War and re-instituted for the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and then of course the War on Terror (9/11). Date of institution (Parenthesis) & inclusive dates for award are as follows:
1). Korean War (1953): 27 Jun 1950 - 27 Jul 1954
2). Vietnam War (1966): 1 Jan 1961 - 14 Aug 1974
3). Gulf War (1991): 2 Aug 1990 - 30 Nov 1995
4). War on Terror (2001): 11 Sep 2001 - Present

Note: one only had to serve 1 day of "active" service within the eligible dates to be awarded the NDSM.

In recognition of more than one of the 4 periods of service, a bronze star device was won on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the medal.
