This is an authentic German enamel petrol advertising sign from BP (British Petroleum). "Münz-Tank" translates to "Coin Tank" (coin-operated fuel pump). These signs were mounted outside unmanned filling stations or specific designated pumps in Germany & German-speaking European regions, allowing drivers to purchase gasoline automatically by depositing coins into a slot mechanism.
Vintage 1960s & sourced directly from the region of Saarland, Germany.
Introduced by BP in Germany during the 1960s, these signs were mounted outside gas stations to signal a breakthrough service; 24-hour automated fueling via coin-operated pumps. Drivers could refuel late at night after the regular station staff had closed up for the day. The sign utilized the iconic mid-century minimalist corporate font and color scheme (green text over a crisp white background anchored by a bright yellow vertical band) used by BP Germany during that era.
