This is a classic 19th Century French model 1831 Foot Artillery Short Sword, often referred to as a "coupe choux" or cabbage cutter. It features a heavy ribbed brass hilt with a wide, straight, double-edged blade, modeled after the Roman gladius. This pattern was introduced in 1831 and was commonly used by French foot artillery soldiers throughout the 19th century.
