This is an authentic French Napoleonic Heavy Cuirassier Cavalry Sword. An unusual and iconic Napoleonic sword carried by French cavalry cuirassiers. The large brass hilt is of four-bar construction and the grip is (was) wrapped in leather while the blade is multi-fullered. The hilt has numerous markings including a Versailles maker mark.
Stamping:
This sword contains the "Versailles" stamp which denotes the brass hilt was manufactured or assembled at the prestigious Versailles Armory (Manufacture de Versailles) during the Napoleonic era. Just above the lettering, you can see a stamped inspection mark (poinçon) inside a small oval or circle, which was placed by the military controller or inspector to certify the metal's quality.
Condition:
It's an aged piece but standard age wear should be expected. The blade shows significant patina, dark staining, & pitting to the blade indicating oxidation or age. The leather grip has mostly deteriorated or is absent. The is about 1/2" of the blade's tip missing.
