Established during the immediate post WW2 era of the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1945-1946) and continued through the Cold War period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946-1990).

Original Issue - Full Size Medal

Earned in 3 classes:
Class 1 - All Gold
Class 2 - Silver background w/gold star
Class 3 - All Silver

It's an Order of Merit awarded to Bulgarian and foreign citizens for excellence of outstanding achievements, innovations, or excellence in organization. Also awarded to artists and scientists for long service to the nation.

The Order existed in three grades:
- Knight/Dame Commander
- Knight/Dame Officer
- Knight/Dame.

Design/Description:
Awarded until 1955 (Type 1), originally with either a tri-fold ribbon for males or a bow for females. After (Type 2), the device was a 5 sided soviet (Communist) design featuring the Hammer & Sickle. The ribbon was red with a thin green stripe and a thin white stripe on the edge (the colors of the Bulgarian flag).
