This is a classic 19th Century Imperial Russian pioneer 1834 Sawback Short Sword (or sidearm). They were issued to pioneer troops or artillery men & Sappers (combat engineers) & used mostly during the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) against the Ottoman Empire (Turkey today), the 2nd French Empire, the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland, & the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont.

Referred as: M1834 Тесак (Tesak), "Cleaver" or "Machete" in Russian.

The sword has been cleaned & is in overall excellent condition.

These are quite rare & difficult to find.

Description:
Fitted with a solid brass grooved hilt & round brass pommel, ribbed grip, & cross guard. Double edged blade with serrated sawback edge and deep fuller.

Maker Marked:
- Hallmarks on the Ricasso
- Cross guard is date stamped 1834

History:
The new "Tesak" entered service in 1834 replacing the heavy & curved 1827 pattern. It was issued to lower enlisted ranks of the pioneer service & to enlisted men of the foot artillery. This weapon would serve for nearly twenty years in conflicts across Europe and Asia when it was replaced by an 1855 pattern (no sawback edging). The Crimean War would prove to be its last major conflict.
