The Wound Badge was instituted by Wilhelm II to reward and recognize the sacrifice of German Military personnel wounded in active service during World War I.
Adolf Hitler re-instituted the Badge during the 1939 Polish Campaign by combining the Army and Navy types into one award versus reinstituting the World War I Naval Wound Badge.
Note: Adolf Hitler was awarded the wound badge during his service in WWI.
Variants:
Gold Badge: Conferred for five or more wounds (or lost a limb).
Silver Badge: Conferred for three or four wounds.
Black Badge: Conferred for one or two wounds.
Description:
Constructed of silvered tombak with a vertical pin-back. This wound badge is the same variation as was awarded in WWI with one exception; the addition of the Swastika to the helmet.
Obverse:
Depicts a Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) emblazoned w/the Swastika & overlaying crossed swords on a pebbled field within a laurel branch wreath.
Reverse:
Vertical pin-back w/functional hinge/catch assembly.
