WW2 (Nazi Germany) - Cross of Honor of the German Mother (Bronze) - Original Issue
Instituted 16 December 1938, the Mother's Cross is a Nazi Germany civil award that recognized women who gave birth & successfully raised a large number of "racially pure" children. It was intended to encourage child birth and considered the most significant award conferred upon a woman.
Established in three classes:
1. Gold - 8 or more children
2. Silver - 6 to 7 children
3. Bronze - 4 to 5 children
Note: It was later expanded to include "ethnic German" mothers, those from regions that were incorporated into the German Reich (Austria, Sudetenland, etc.).
Description:
Latin cross w/concave arms in bronze, blue, white, and black enamels, & sun rays emanating from between the arms of a center medallion. Suspended from a blue & white ribbon designed to hang from the mother's neck.
Obverse: Circular medallion ornament featuring a black enameled Hakenkreuz (swastika) within a bronze ring inscribed “Der Deutschen Mutter” (The German Mother). The four arms are edged w/white enamels & solid blue panels
Reverse (Version II): Stamped w/date of implementation (16. Dezember 1938) & the Führer & Reichs-Chancellor's (Adolf Hitler) signature. Note: the 1st version featured Hitler's signature and the phrase, "Das Kind Adelt Die Mutter" (The Child Ennobles the Mother). Version I is extremely rare!
