WW2 (Nazi Germany) Dynamo Hand Generator Pocket Flashlight - 1943

$66.00
Sold out

This Wehrmacht steel case Philips Taschenlampe (pocket flashlight) was produced as type 7424 during WW2 & painted an olive green. This Dynamo flashlight, produced in this color only in 1943 by Philips exporting company, works w/all parts intact, save for the bulb cover (missing). A rare piece to find, let alone in working condition.

It is hand-powered (requires no batteries) using the spring-loaded side-lever & when depressed, activates the interior generator producing an electric current needed to light the bulb. The bulb remains lit so long as the spring-loaded lever is repeatedly depressed. The flashlight easily & smoothly fits in pockets by use of an integral "switch", locking the lever flat to the flashlights body.

HISTORY:
During the German invasion of Holland in 1940, soldiers found that the Eindhoven based Dutch firm Phillips, had the ability to manufacture a much needed product for the Wehrmact (Armed Forces); a "no batteries required" pocket sized flashlight. A large portion of these flashlights were made by prisoners of the Herzogenbush (Camp Vught) concentration camp, near the small village of Vught and were used by the German armed forces as well as the Allied forces and civilians. The workers were known as the "Philips Commando".

The Dynamo Flashlight was the world's first hand-powered consumer product & because energy use was severely restricted during WW2, this flashlight was popular.

Made in Holland
- Given the nickname "Knijpkat" (squeezed cat) in the Netherlands because it made a "whining" sound when used.

German Armed Forces used it during the war and because it made a "whining" sound when used, the Dutch nicknamed it the "knijpkat" (Squeezed Cat).
