This is an authentic WW2 Nazi Germany Army (Heer) tropical pith helmet eagle shield, also known as a "Hoheitsabzeichen".

Introduced in late 1940 as part of the tropical uniform developed for entrance into the North African campaign, specifically for the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK).

Although, associated with Rommel's Afrikakorps, pith helmets were also worn by the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and Waffen-SS in other Southern Fronts, including Italy, the Mediterranean, and southern Russia.

DESCRIPTION:
Stamped aluminum shield with two attaching prongs intact at reverse.

Obverse: Features an embossed, high-relief Wehrmacht-style eagle with down-swept wings, clutching a swastika in its talons, set against a black background.

HISTORY:
The Kriegsmarine (German Navy) was the first branch of service to use a pith helmet, with its development dating back to 1856 in the Prussian Navy.
