HISTORY:
Day badges were introduced in 1933. In an effort to gain support of workers (or laborers), the NSDAP (Nazi Party) declared May 1st the “Day of National Work” as an official state (paid) holiday to celebrate laborers (& the working class). Referred to as May Day, it was celebrated by organized labor w/celebrations on 1 May 1933 (and thereafter) honoring German workers.

Hitler praised the virtues of labor, declaring in Völkischer Beobachter (National Observer), "I only acknowledge one nobility—that of labor." They (Nazi Party) believed the only way to avoid a repeat of 1918 was to secure workers' support for the German government. They also insisted (through propaganda) that all Germans participate in May Day celebrations; suggesting this would help break down class hostility between workers and citizens. Hitler praised the working "patriots" who built Germany's industrial strength, honorably served in the war, and claimed they'd been oppressed under economic liberalism. Associated strongly w/the political left, the "Berliner Morgenpost" (Berlin Morning Post) praised the regime's May Day celebrations.
