The Union Jack (& its design) is the United Kingdom’s national flag & unites the flags of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The Union Jack, also referred to as the Union Flag, traces its name to the unification of the three kingdoms (England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland).
The origins of ‘Jack’ is a bit suspect but theories suggest it’s from a small maritime flag. The earliest known version was designed by King James I in 1606 after he inherited the thrones of England and Scotland in 1603.
