This is an authentic vintage Pyrene 1-quart brass hand-pump fire extinguisher, manufactured by the Pyrene Manufacturing Company. These classic firefighting artifacts were widely used from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century in homes, businesses, and Military Vehicles.
History and Operation:
Introduced in 1909, this device used a built-in T-handle piston pump to expel liquid onto a fire rather than relying on stored pressure. It originally contained carbon tetrachloride (CTC), an effective chemical for electrical (Class C) and liquid (Class B) fires. Production phased out due to the prohibition of carbon tetrachloride extinguishers being banned internationally because heat decomposes CTC into phosgene gas—a highly toxic chemical compound.
