Vintage (1990s) British Beer Pump Tap Handle - Old Speckled Hen, Strong Fine Ale
This is an authentic vintage brass British beer tap handle/badge for the "Old Speckled Hen". These clasps (or clips) are badges attached to beer tap handles in British pubs to display the name, style, and alcohol content of the beer currently being served from that particular line.
From the Morland Brewery, this beer is a strong Fine Ale with a 5.2% ABV. The beer was first brewed in 1979 in Abingdon-on-Thames, England. It was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the local MG car factory. While the clip features the historic Morland Brewery name, Morland was acquired in 2000 by Greene King Brewery, which continues to brew the popular ale at their site in Bury St Edmunds.
STORY BEHIND THE NAME: The "Speckled Hen" Car - Factory workers used an old, fabric-covered MG car (a 1927 MG 14/40 Super Sports) to move around the plant grounds. Over time, paint and grease splatters gave the car a mottled look, leading workers to nickname it the "Owld Speckled Un" or "The Speckled Hen". The iconic octagonal shape of the label and pump clip directly mirrors the famous octagonal emblem of MG cars.
