This is an authentic Nazi Germany DRL sports badge awarded to men and women, ages 18 to 24, to encourage achievements in physical education.
It dates back to the Imperial German Empire with the Award for Physical Exercise & was continuously amended and expanded during the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) & into Nazi Germany.
The Bronze Badge was awarded to those who passed the five components of the physical fitness test within a period of 12 months. The tests included various activities in running, swimming, jumping, weight throwing, and speed tests.
DESCRIPTION: Bronze.
Obverse: Features the acronym DRL with a swastika at the bottom.
Reverse: Maker Marked "Wernstein Jena" with the patent number "D.R.G.M. 35269" (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster).

HISTORY:
The acronym for the German Imperial Commission for Physical Exercise (Deutscher Reichsausschuss für Leibesübungen), DRA, is featured on the Model I badges as a remnant of the Weimar Republic Sports Badge design.
The DRA was replaced by the German Reich Federation for Physical Education (Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen) on July 27, 1934, and beginning in 1935 the Sports Badge design featured a swastika and the acronym DRL.
Formed on 27 July 1934, The NSRL...Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen (National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise) was the umbrella organization for sports and physical education in Nazi Germany.
