This is an authentic period antique railroad switch padlock w/original key & chain, manufactured by Sargent & Co., an American hardware manufacturer founded in the 19th century. These locks were used by rail companies to secure track switches. The long chain and attached eye screw allow the lock to be permanently tethered to a post or rail structure so it isn't lost when unlocked.
Era: late 1800s to early 1900s.
Characteristics:
- Original chain and key.
- Brass emblem (keyhole cover) designed to keep out debris.
- Centered circular brass emblem featuring the company's distinctive "S & Co" monogram, where the 'S' is styled to entwine the 'Co'.
These locks were common during the late 1800s into the early 1900s. They were widely used for securing various structures, including smokehouses, railroad cars, and military storage, due to their durable construction.
