Vintage Medal Includes:
Full Size Medal w/”former Yugoslavia” bar

Earned for service in the Balkans War, OPERATION Joint Endeavor (Former Yugoslavia, Albania, the Former Republic of Macedonia, and the Adriatic Sea) for personnel arriving in theatre any time prior to 3 December 2002 (but following the North Atlantic Council’s undertaking in December 1995). Those arriving in-theatre on or after 3 December 2002 earn the medal’s successor, the Non-Article 5 NATO Medal for Operations in the Balkans (not available in this advertisement), replacing the NATO-FY on 1 January 2003.

The medal was always issued with a bar inscribed "FORMER YUGOSLAVIA" or "EX-YOUGOSLAVIE" (Medal set is incomplete if bar is missing).

Eligibility Criteria for issuance has expired; can no longer be earned.

Description:
The medal is bronze containing the standard NATO star-set wrapped in a wreath of olives on the Obverse. The reverse is inscribed "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" and the words "In the service of peace and freedom" in English and French.

History:
Operation Joint Endeavor, under the auspices of UN Security Council Resolution 1031, NATO was charged w/implementing the military aspects of the resolution’s Peace Agreement. A NATO-led multinational force began its mission on 20 December 1995 w/a one-year mandate. The military aspects of peace was settled within the stipulated one-year timeframe but the civil and political environment was insecure and ripe for instability. NATO Defense Ministers concluded further support was necessary for the establishment of a secure environment after the expiration of the mandate. On 12 December 1996, implementation of the Peace Agreement continued all of which operated under Chapter VII of the UN Charter (peace enforcement).
